Nationals Walk Off Against Braves, Sweeping Rain-Shortened Series

Washington D.C. – The Washington Nationals secured a thrilling 8-7 victory over the Atlanta Braves in extra innings on Thursday, May 22, 2025, completing a sweep of their rain-shortened two-game series at Nationals Park. Pinch-hitter Amed Rosario delivered the game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning.

The back-and-forth contest saw both teams exchange blows throughout the evening. The Braves jumped out to an early lead in the first inning with back-to-back solo home runs from Matt Olson and Marcell Ozuna. Olson has been on a hot streak, homering in four of his last five games.

However, the Nationals’ offense responded resiliently. Keibert Ruiz contributed an RBI double, and the Nationals capitalized on opportunities to chip away at and eventually overcome the Braves’ lead. AJ Smith-Shawver started on the mound for Atlanta and was tagged for seven runs in three innings.

The Braves managed to tie the game at 7-7 in the top of the ninth inning, thanks to a clutch one-out RBI double by Matt Olson. Austin Riley attempted to score the go-ahead run from first on the play but was thrown out at the plate. Marcell Ozuna then popped out to end the inning, sending the game into extras.

In the bottom of the 10th, with the automatic runner Robert Hassell III (making his major league debut) on third after a sacrifice bunt by Alex Call, Amed Rosario singled to left field off Braves reliever Dylan Lee (1-2), sealing the victory for the Nationals. The win marked Washington’s fifth straight victory.

The loss drops the Braves to a 24-25 record on the season.
